Ileana Toma was born in Bessarabia, the daughter of an Orthodox priest, and began her professional career in the exact world of science. A graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Bucharest, she worked for over three decades at the Astronomical Observatory of the Romanian Academy, where she researched the movements of the stars and contributed to the construction of a fundamental reference system in the universe. For her work, she was awarded the “Gheorghe Lazăr” prize by the Romanian Academy.
But beyond the starry sky, Ileana Toma always carried another calling in her heart: that of exploring human destiny through literature. After a long silence, she chose to write, convinced that the history and experiences of the past can shed light on the present and help us understand ourselves.
Her book, “The Loneliness of Vlad Țepeș”, published in 1995, is more than a historical novel – it is a true fresco of the Romanian Middle Ages, painted with finesse and drama. Ileana Toma shows us not only the feared ruler, legendary for his cruelty and justice, but also the man behind the throne: lonely, troubled, caught between his duty to his country and the burden of a life without peace.
Through this novel, the author manages to bring the reader closer to Vlad Țepeș, revealing his human side, vulnerable and yet majestic. It is a story about power and suffering, about destiny and loneliness, about the courage to remain righteous in a world torn apart by wars and betrayals.
“The Loneliness of Vlad Țepeș” is not only a captivating read, but also an invitation to look at history through different eyes—not only through the prism of facts, but also through the turmoil of the human soul.
